If you are facing some kind of connection issues while connecting to VPN Protocols like:

  • Any sort of connection failure
  • Speed related issues
  • Instability in connection or frequent disconnections
  • Issues of connectivity in other applications

You will be suggested by our support to change your VPN protocol to check your connection. The reason is that VPN connection significantly depends on how is your ISP, firewall, device, or router is handling certain protocols. It is probable that the traffic using a particular protocol is blocked, redirected or interfered with something.

You can always select a different protocol and check if your connection issue persists. It is easy to change protocols, but it depends on your setup and device that you are using to connect VPN.

Available VPN Protocols

PureVPN offers these 6 protocols for all users.

Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol is most commonly used VPN protocol and it gives very fast speed; however, it is not the most secure protocol.

Layer 2 Tunnel Protocol does not give good speed, but it is considered as a secure VPN protocol, because it uses IPsec encryption suite.

Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol gives average speed and it is a secure protocol but it only works on Windows.

Internet Key Exchange (version 2) is also an IPsec based VPN protocol and it is one of the fastest and most secure VPN protocol, but it is only supported on limited platforms.

OpenVPN UDP provides exceptional speed in a VPN connection, but the connection is less reliable.

OpenVPN TCP provides a reliable connection, but it does not have a very good speed.

OpenVPN requires third-party software to be installed for setup, but the rest of the protocols can be set up without any third-party software.
